As I take the next step toward achieving my NFL dream, I have made an important decision to use my performance at Sam Houston State’s NFL Pro Day to support OCRA, in honor of my mom. Although I didn’t know it at the time, I saw first hand the toll that Ovarian Cancer can take on a woman and her family. I saw my mom battle illness and complications, including kidney failure, until finally she lost her fight. I did not know until after she passed away, when I learned from my aunt, that what she was battling was Ovarian Cancer. My mom wanted to protect me from what she was going through, wanting us to all stay positive throughout the fight.

After she passed, my family and I began to research Ovarian Cancer to find out more about what my mom went through, and to see if we might be able to help others who face a similar battle. We learned that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2018, about 22,240 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed and 14,070 women will die of ovarian cancer in the United States.

For my mom, and for all the women and families out there who face this tough fight, I am honored to use this great opportunity and platform that I’ve been given to support the amazing life saving work of OCRA, as it funds cutting-edge science that is enabling discoveries, creating new treatments and hastening desperately needed breakthroughs.
