For the past couple months I have been riding my bike often and building up to a Labor Day weekend trip to Cincinnati from Dayton, OH and back. This trip had no real meaning, outside of it being a personal goal that I wanted to prove to myself I could accomplish. Then, on 8/4/19 the neighborhood I work and play in (Dayton’s historic Oregon District) was the target of a mass shooting, leaving 9 dead and dozens more injured. One of those victims was Lois Oglesby, and her story has hit me the hardest. Lois (a mere 27 years old) left behind 2 children, one 6 year old and the other only 2 months. This senseless act of violence has left these babies (Hannah & Reign) without a mother, something no child should have to experience. This tragic story is one of many that occurred that morning in Dayton, leaving an entire community affected.
After about a week of disbelief, sadness, and anger I wondered if there was a way I could turn this seemingly meaningless bike trip I was planning into something more. That’s when I stumbled upon the Pledge It service. Thru Pledge It, I am raising money to donate to an already established fund for Lois Oglesby that has been setup by the Miami Valley Community Action Partnership (where Lois’ mother LaSandra has worked for almost 23 years.) The CEO of MVCAP is connected to this Pledge It campaign to ensure transparency. 100% of the money earned will go towards the long-term care of these 2 beautiful children. Please consider helping my campaign in any manner you are able.
I will be riding from Dayton along the Little Miami Scenic Trail to my destination in Cincinnati on the morning of August 31st. I will be returning via the same path on Labor Day (September 2nd). I have a place to stay already arranged for recovery between rides. I will be tracking my ride with the popular cycling app Strava, and uploading those results to be viewed by all who contribute. You may also folIow me on the Strava app. I have never rode this distance once, let alone twice over the course of 3 days. In total, Google estimates the ride at 142 miles. It will be a challenge, but one I am up to and have been training for.
