As a professional baseball player who takes his health very seriously, food and nutrition are a big part of my life. It hurts me to know that there are people around the world who are hungry and don’t have the basic necessities like clean drinking water.

This season, I’m taking the field with a renewed purpose - to hit out against poverty for some of the world’s most vulnerable people. I’m joining up with Striking Out Poverty, an initiative of Food for the Hungry and Big League Impact, in an effort to restore dignity and hope to people in our local communities and around the globe.

Please join me by pledging a donation for every hit that I have this season. I’m kicking off the campaign by personally pledging $100 for every hit. Adam Wainwright has agreed to match up to $10,000 that we collectively raise, so anything you give will have TRIPLE the impact!

We are focusing our efforts this season on funding 2 Water Projects in the community of El Mogote, located in the province of Monte Plata (about an hour North of Santo Domingo). The community of El Mogote has roughly 230 families and a population of 805 people.

Project #1 - Access to Water & Water Infrastructure: Includes building a community well, expanding existing infrastructure and providing more access points to the families in this community who do not currently have running water. Many, many hours a day are spent fetching water for household needs keeping kids out of school and preventing other family supporting work. We are raising $11,925 to complete this project.

Project #2 - Water Purification System: El Mogote lacks access to clean water and therefore is exposed to water borne illnesses that keep children out of school, elevate medical costs and continue the cycle of poverty. A water purification system will provide this community with the means to purify their current water source giving them access to safe and clean water.
