Proceeds benefit Nevada Diabetes Association
Based on 10 pounds, each worth $124.90
Your mission: should you chose to accept it, is to help me raise funds for my favorite charity, the Nevada and California Diabetes Association. All funds raised will stay local and go directly to programs, services and campership funds.
My mission: which I chose to accept, is simple. I am bettering myself, getting healthy, and losing weight while raising money for an organization I truly care about. I am asking YOU to sponsor ME so that together, WE can send children with type 1 diabetes to camp. With every pound I lose, the Nevada Diabetes Association gains!
A little bit about me. If you do not know me already, my name is Tara Winkelman, I am 37 years old and I am the Director of Programs for the Nevada Diabetes Association. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on August 7th, 1984, when I was just 5 years old. I started going to diabetes camp a year later in 1985 with the help of my dance teacher Miss Marcia Sarosik. Marcia used the proceeds of her dance recitals to send me, along with 2 other friends (Angie and Ivy), to diabetes camp…yes, the same camp I am still part of.
Now, it’s my turn to give back. It’s no secret that I struggle with my weight. I’ve tried every “diet” there is, tried to work out, tried this, tried that…all with failed results. Well, I refuse to give up! There are kids counting on me to lose the weight so I can help send them to the same camp I went to as a child. My focus has a purpose. I can’t express to you how important camp is to a child. Camp is where you don’t feel alone as a Type 1 diabetic, where you learn how to manage your disease, where you meet kids just like you and form lifelong friendships! Camp is also a place to learn how to do your own injections, change your own pump sites, and further your diabetes education. I know that without camp, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
