About the Jimmy Fund and the Boston Red Sox

The Jimmy Fund started in 1948, with a young cancer patient, dubbed “Jimmy,” who loved baseball and had one wish: a TV so he could watch his favorite team, the Boston Braves, play from his hospital room. Donations flooded in and the Jimmy Fund was born, to support care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. A few years later, the Boston Red Sox stepped up to adopt the Jimmy Fund as their official charity, forming a bond that would become one of the most unique, longstanding, and visible charitable relationships in the history of professional sports.

Over the years, Red Sox legends from Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski to Tim Wakefield and David Ortiz would show their support by visiting patients in Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic, with one player serving as the “Jimmy Fund Captain” each year to help spread awareness and raise funds. The Red Sox also generously donate their time and support through events hosted at Fenway Park, such as the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon presented by Arbella Insurance and Jimmy Fund Day at Fenway presented by DraftKings, and by providing special experiences for Dana-Farber patients. You can add your support to this longstanding partnership and join us today to strike out cancer!
