My mom is the toughest person I know. Nothing ever seems to faze her. No matter what she had going on in her own life, she never missed one event or game of mine, my brothers or my sisters. So, in late July of 2019, right before my Junior year at App State, when we found out that she had Endometrial Cancer, it floored us. For the first time in my life, I could tell she was scared. In typical fashion however, the thing she was most worried about was missing any of my games.
Luckily, she caught it very early. She was able to find a great doctor to treat her, and perform a procedure that made her completely cancer free. Also, luckily, when the insurance company gave her problems with coverage, she was able to afford to take care of it. She only ended up missing five games due to the surgery and recovery, and made her triumphant return to Boone for our game against Georgia Southern on October 31st.
Our family realized some things going through that with my mom. We learned that Endometrial Cancer affects black women at a much higher rate than other women. We realized that many women and families are not as fortunate as ours in dealing with this disease. Many women do not know the signs to look for, and therefore do not catch it early. Many families are not fortunate enough to have the means to deal with the extremely high cost of insurance and treatment. Many women do not have the support that they need to deal with their diagnosis.
That is why, as I take the next step toward achieving my NFL dream, I have made an important decision to use my performance at the NFL Combine support the Endometrial Cancer Action Network for African-Americans (ECANA), in honor of my mom. For all the families out there who face this battle, I am honored to use this great opportunity and platform that I’ve been given to support the amazing work of ECANA, as it works to create support, community, and empowerment for any African-American woman affected by endometrial cancer.
