Aja Pollard’s “AND 1…4 AYRIS”

It was her turn at bat. She was so busy laughing, smiling and waving as her volunteer pushed her to home plate. She looked over her shoulder to make sure we were still there. She didn’t want us to miss it. After all, this is usually where she’d be in the stands cheering US on. This time we were the ones cheering her on with excitement. Not very many dry eyes. The crowd seemed to roar and she only laughed and smiled more. I’d say it was one of her shining moments. Field of Dreams made it possible.

As a big sister there were so many things I envisioned us doing together as we grew up. Some of those things we still get to do, and a lot of those things we had to learn to do differently. What I love about our family is we always made a way, 4 Ayris. Soon, I’ll be off to college prayerfully playing collegiate basketball. But, before I leave… I want to do what big sisters do… take care and watch out for our younger siblings. I want to make a way… 4 Ayris and all the other kids whose families pack the stands to give an ovation to the kids who don’t always get that shining moment.

Field of Dreams not only has a baseball program for exceptional kids with different abilities of all ages that is free to all families who participate… they’ve also built and are continuing to build an accessible playground… something my brothers and I have wanted to do for years, 4 Ayris and all her friends. Last year, for his Varsity Senior Football Season my brother Micah raised almost $10,000 for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation in honor of our little sister. This year in my Varsity Senior Basketball Season I hope to match that and make a local impact. You’re never too young to make a difference… You’re never to old either. We can do this together.
