A.Q.’s Connection to the Cause

A.Q. first realized his potential to impact the rare disease community his freshman year at Penn State in 2004. During his time at Penn State Shipley participated in several Lift for Life events and the Blue-White weekend dunk tank. His commitment to helping raise the priority of rare diseases has been instrumental in the successful Uplifting Athletes tradition at Penn State.

For the Arizona Cardinals Week 13 matchup at home against the Los Angeles Rams, fans can support A.Q. and the Penn State Chapter of Uplifting Athletes by making a pledge for every yard the rushing attack gains during the My Cause My Cleats game. Fans can also make a flat one time donation.

The proceeds from A.Q. Shipley’s My Cause My Cleats Pledge Drive supports the mission of Uplifting Athletes and its charitable programs: Rare Disease Awareness, Rare Disease Research, Uplifting Experiences and Uplifting Leaders.

The Penn State Chapter

Penn State was the first Uplifting Athletes Chapter. Founded in 2003 by Uplifting Athletes founder Scott Shirley in honor of his father, Don Shirley. When Don Shirley was diagnosed with a rare disease, Scott Shirley and his Penn State teammates rallied behind the notion of using their position as college football student-athletes to shine a spotlight on the rare disease community.

The Penn State Chapter has run a Lift For Life as part of Uplifting Athletes every year since 2003, and recently held its 15th Lift For Life event.

About Uplifting Athletes

Uplifting Athletes is a national nonprofit that inspires the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport and empowers medical researchers to find cures. A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and consequently lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments. Founded in 2007, Uplifting Athletes has college football student-athlete led chapters nationwide in FBS and FCS programs including half the schools in the Big Ten and ACC conferences.
