At the end of summer I will be racing in the Santa Rosa Marathon, and the Marine Corps Marathon in October, to help fundraise for the nonprofit Depression 2 Extinction. This group’s mission is to bring awareness to the stigma surrounding depression and anxiety disorders, and help bring that stigma to extinction!

Depression and anxiety have been part of my life since I was 18. Whether that was through helping friends/family who were struggling, or suffering myself starting when I was in grad school, these disorders have always been present around me. In the past I’ve struggled with being harassed, anxiety surrounding school, work and relationships, and chronic pain from my Endometriosis - all causing flare-ups of stress and depressive episodes. Most recently, I’ve significantly struggled with my Endometriosis surgery and post-op complications that left me feeling isolated, anxious, and afraid.

I am lucky that I have had an amazing support team of friends, family, and professionals that help me work through issues and tough times. Working out and movement have always provided solace for me during difficult times. Long runs help me clear my head, Ironmans and ultra-cycling events make me feel strong and confident, and evening walks can help me relax after a stressful day. Unfortunately, I have seen what happens when people are too embarrassed to seek help for themselves, ashamed that they need it in the first place. This cause hits directly to home for me, and I want everyone to know that if they’re struggling, it’s okay, and there are safe spaces to get help and depression/anxiety is nothing to be ashamed about. I want to help embolden people to ask for help when they need it, and find the toolset that works best for them to live happy, healthy and beautiful lives.
