My name is George Hatalowich and I’m currently a junior football student-athlete at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. I’m so excited to bring to your attention that #WE have started fundraising for our Chapter's 2019 Lift for Life on April 25th.  Our Lift For Life in 2018 was an absolute success were we raised nearly $12,000 for the rare disease community! That's incredible! I cannot thank you all enough for your support whether that be through donations, raising awareness on your social media, or encouraging others to join the fight against rare diseases. Our Chapter's goal this year is $15,000 and we are very eager and motivated to achieve it, but we need your help! So, if possible, please donate! Any amount helps! Day by day, cent by cent, #WE can tackle rare diseases!! Please help me reach the campaign goal of $2,500 by pledging now in the attached link. I really appreciate your support. So, for those of you who might be wonder how and why I got involved with Uplifting Athletes, here’s a little more about my story.  Ever since the beginning of high school, service has been an important part of my life. Through becoming involved in programs like Special Olympics, elementary school tutoring, and outdoor education trips, I found the power of service to being something greater than myself.  To constantly strive to live my life through serving others each and every day.  Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  After my sophomore season at Davidson, I had the opportunity co-found the Davidson Uplifting Athletes Chapter.   My reasoning to become involved with the Uplifting Athletes organization was two-fold. First, I had the opportunity to pursue a passion, which is to serve and make a difference.  Secondly, the goals and purpose of this organization resonated with me on a personal level.  Personally, my connection to rare diseases came through one of my best friends and his family.  In third grade at South Hanover Elementary School, I met Tommy Klock. Instantly our friendship grew and I became extremely close with him and his family. For those of you who don't know his family, they are some of the most genuine, kind-hearted people I have ever met.   In 2015, Tommy’s uncle, Tommy Kirchhoff passed away from ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a form of rare disease. Uncle Tommy was a star athlete at the high school and collegiate level, and even played for a short time with the Philadelphia Eagles.  He was a proud husband of four beautiful children and passed away at the young age of 44. His passing had a tremendous impact on his family and on myself. It was tough to see the pain and suffering of such a beautiful family and I could not even imagine what it would have been like if I was in their shoes. In the United States, there are approximately 7,000 different rare diseases that collectively effect 30 million people. Roughly 75% of rare diseases affect children, and 30% of children with a rare disease will not see their 5th birthday. The rare disease community is placed at a serious disadvantage in regards to the lack of financial initiatives and pharmaceutical research for new treatments and medicine.  As well, patients are constantly faced with challenges such as delays in obtaining a diagnosis, misdiagnosis, psychological burden and lack of support services for the patient and family.  Therefore, we must support these patients and their families in order to combat these rare diseases and save lives!  Together #WE can change the world and put an end to rare diseases! Thank you and God bless! #WeTackleRare

How you can help

The proceeds from our 2019 Lift for Life support the mission of Uplifting Athletes and its charitable programs: Rare Disease Awareness, Rare Disease Research, Uplifting Experiences and Uplifting Leaders.

The Davidson Chapter

Davidson College joined the nationwide network of Uplifting Athletes chapters last summer with their inaugural Lift For Life. The Davidson Chapter made an immediate impact and we look forward to continuing to grow the impact and the tradition at Davidson College.

About Uplifting Athletes

A nonprofit organization founded in 2007, Uplifting Athletes inspires the Rare Disease Community with hope through the power of sport. A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and typically lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments.

Uplifting Athletes fulfills its mission through a unique network of college football student-athlete led chapters, Uplifting Ambassadors and Team UA participants. Since its inception, Uplifting Athletes has raised more than $4.5 million in support of the Rare Disease Community with a third of that, $1.5 million, given to fund rare disease research.

Thank You!

Thank you for your support of the Davidson Chapter and the Rare Disease Community. Every little bit helps. Please don’t forget to share this campaign and your support on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
