Help end the Stigma of Depression and Anxiety.

I fell in love with the sport of running upon completing my first half marathon. At some point, I was talked into registering for an ultramarathon, and found the challenge and beauty of the trails addictive. In some ways running saved my life, and the trails continue to bring me unmatched joy. Trail running has become simultaneously the means to achieve and the celebration of a strong body, and a sound mind.

Depression and anxiety were a part of my every day life from ages 14-21 as I battled with and finally conquered an eating disorder. Having had depression and anxiety is not something I’m ashamed of, nor is it something I’m proud of. What it has become is a story I can tell to allow others to feel comfortable speaking up about and seeking help for illnesses as real as any other.

Quest for the Crest is a 31 mile long race through the black mountains of North Carolina. The course crests 6 peaks above 6,000 feet, the highest of which is Mt. Mitchell at 6,684 feet, the highest point east of the Mississippi. This is one of the most difficult 50ks in North America. While intrinsic motivation carries me through many races, a dollar towards a cause I believe in behind every mile completed will undoubtedly give me additional strength to pull from when the going gets tough, and it will get tough out there.
