Rama N’diaye, a native of Dakar, Senegal, crossed the globe to join the University of California in the Fall of 2006. She embarked on a five-year career for the Golden Bears. After her college career, she went on to play professional basketball for three seasons in Iran, Spain, and Turkey. Unfortunately, in July, 2016 she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer at the young age of 29. When news reached the current 2016-17 University of California Women's Basketball team, the staff and players decided to do something epic to help Rama!
Believing that nothing is given and everything is earned, the University of California Women's Basketball launched their first performance-based fundraising campaign, Rebounds for Rama, during the 2016-17 season. Staff and players invited fans to pledge a donation for every rebound the team recorded during the regular season.
"As a result of the side effects of her treatments, Rama has not been able to consistently work and therefore has sustained significant financial hardship. It is our goal as a Cal Family to help support Rama in her fight against Breast Cancer emotionally, spiritually and financially." - Jill Culbertson, Director of Basketball Operations
After a few weeks of relentlessly promoting the campaign, the Golden Bears staff and players successfully attracted more than 100 fans who collectively pledged $12.11 per rebound! It was then time for the Golden Bears to take the court and earn the pledges they had received from fans. The Golden Bears played extremely hard during the season and ended up recording 1,157 rebounds during the season. Overall, the team and fans helped raise more than $14,000 for Rama and her cancer treatments!
