The secret to peer to peer success - keep you participants coming back for more!

Returning participants are key to the success of your peer-to-peer fundraising event for many reasons, but perhaps the most obvious is their ability to drive fundraising dollars. On average, returning participants raise 1.5 - 3x more than first-time participants. Returning participants also typically require less initial encouragement to sign-up because they are already familiar with your cause and understand what’s expected of them when it comes to fundraising. Creating a plan to retain past participants also doesn’t need to be complicated. You can borrow best practices and principles from donor retention strategies to remind participants how great their experience was and create excitement for the next event.

Focus on the following to ensure your peer-to-peer participants return:
  • Celebrate their successes at the end of your peer to peer fundraising campaign
  • Share stories about how their participation and fundraising dollars impacted your community
  • Create a feeling of exclusivity by sharing ‘sneak peaks’ of upcoming event details as you begin to prepare for the next event
  • Spotlight specific stories of other participants to create a greater sense of community
  • Offer early-access opportunities such as exclusive incentives or unique recognition for participants that return.

One final note about returning participants; they’re also a great audience to be team captains at your next event! So be sure to consider how you’re encouraging past fundraisers to ‘level-up’ and ask 3-4 people to join their team when they return next year!
