Help Me Restore a Historic Theater!

Why Bike for the Building?

Hey everybody! Thanks for checking out my Pledge It Campaign for the Fairmont Opera House. The idea for this campaign came about when I was out for a bike ride earlier this spring. I’ve really been working hard over the last few months to improve my health, with (almost) daily bike rides, a healthier meal plan, and a commitment to the gym. Because of this, I wanted to find a way that my change in lifestyle can be of a benefit for more than just me. As Executive Director of the Opera House, I am always looking for ways to put my work at the forefront and lead by example. By publicly pairing my commitment to a healthier lifestyle with my commitment to the Fairmont Opera House, I hope to achieve my personal goal of better health and my professional goal of guiding the Fairmont Opera House through a successful capital campaign fundraiser.

My Fairmont Opera House Story

My whole life, I have been the “big guy.” I have been the one towering over people, physically larger than most of those around me. However, I often sit in my office reflecting on the time that I have been here at the Opera House, the work that we have done in the community, the number of people that have been in our building throughout the years, the kids we reached, and so much more, I begin to feel very small compared to the big things we have accomplished.

To try and clear my thoughts, I usually take walks around the building which eventually lead me to the stage. Each time I wander through the building, I take a seat on the front edge of stage and look out at all the empty seats. As I scan across the seats, my eyes always land on a single seat: Balcony Left, Row A, Seat 3. It was in this seat that I remember seeing my first show at the Fairmont Opera House. I came to a school performance of “Lyle Lyle Crocodile” when I was in third grade. I was sitting next to my two best friends, leaning forward in my seat, enthralled by the magic that was occurring on stage.

That was 17 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday.

After this reflection, I look around at the beautiful trim work, the majestic iron chandeliers, the way the lights hit the seats, the curve of the balcony, taking it all in until I scan every inch of the room. Surrounded by an impressive theater with an even more impressive legacy, I feel the presence of those that came before me: Hay, Nicholas, Arneson, and so many more. I feel the thousands of patrons; I imagine laughter, applause, cries of joy and sorrow. I think of the stories the walls could tell if they could talk. I think of the thousands of volunteer hours, community donations, and the blood, sweat, and tears that have gone into this facility.

As Executive Director, I have been given an opportunity and assigned a responsibility to be the curator of the history and the keeper of the legacy of the Fairmont Opera House. It is my job to ensure that when I am gone, this facility and organization remain stronger than ever. That being said, I promise to continue to take steps in the direction of continued success, further community involvement, and perpetuating our mission of bringing cultural experiences to our area. We are continuing a legacy that was left for us to live up to, and leaving one that is worthy of future generations.
