JOIN ME IN STRIKING OUT POVERTY THIS SEASON

After playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic, I felt a strong need to make a difference and to give back to that community. Many people, including myself, take for granted how fortunate we are in the United States — having many daily necessities that we never think twice about. Spending time in Santo Domingo was eye-opening and life-changing for me.

This season, I’m joining up with my teammate Adam Wainwright’s Big League Impact and its partnership with Striking Out Poverty to fund the creation of a baseball field and farm in Reparadero, a community close to where I played in Santo Domingo. Please join me by pledging a donation for every strikeout that I throw this season towards these projects. I’m personally pledging $50 per strikeout, and Adam has offered to match up to $75,000 that we collectively raise, so anything you give will have triple the impact!

Throughout the season, those who pledge towards my campaign will be invited to participate in some really cool events I’ll be hosting and entered to win some great prizes.

I’m so grateful for you generosity in joining me on this journey!

MY PROJECT: A BASEBALL FIELD AND FARM IN REPARADERO

Reparadero is a rural community located near Yamasá in the Monte Plata Province, which is about an hour north of Santo Domingo. Food for the Hungry has been walking alongside this community since July 2015. The community has roughly 360 families and a population of 1260 people.

This community thrives on the sport of baseball. In playing together, the children find camaraderie, teamwork, sportsmanship, physical activity and hope for their futures. FH also finds value in providing sports as part of the holistic development that’s happening in this community. It’s more than a game. With this project FH will help the community build a backstop and provide much-needed leveling and conditioning.

Farming and Sustainable Agriculture: FH’s goal is to improve food security in rural areas of the Dominican Republic through an integrated approach. Farmers will be taken through an intensive training process on appropriate crop production techniques. Each lead farmer will be supported with open pollinated, improved drought/disease-resistant seeds sufficient to plant a household plot.

FH will also promote the keyhole gardening approach with each family in the community. This approach requires less labor, less water, and no costly fertilizers or pesticides and can produce vegetables all year round even under harsh temperatures. Keyhole gardens produce enough to feed a family of eight. These gardens are so prolific that they can support the production of at least five varieties of vegetables at a time, providing dietary diversity for the entire family.

Me pitching in the Dominican Republic:
